Comments from the previous post have me rethinking that entry a bit. It’s always good for us to bind ourselves with our own magic lasso and think about our assumptions. Only the magic lasso let's us know if we are being faithful to our intent.In the meantime, it also prompted me to think about the greater variety of responses that many queer bloggers have to notions of pride. Some show ambivalence, others celebration. Some are silly and short, others long and grave. Almost all, though, suggest that we need more discussion of what purpose “pride” serves in the community. Here are a few entries that I have noticed to this point. I don't always agree (or disagree) with all of them and they are in no particular order:

Wow, I had no idea there was so much being talked about. I've been thinking more too. Can we just call it a dignity or diversity celebration? Maybe I'm just bugged by the word pride. (yes I know I'm a hypocrite since I recently said that words only have power if you let them.)
It's nice to know that Pride -- whatever it is! -- truly is international.

I think I might have been under the disagree category. Why can't I learn to love the lesbians? I'm trying. And they got me good for my post. Because of their march (whose streets I knew, but the traffic control spread out further than I expected) on Saturday evening, I made an 1 hr and 20 min trip to the grocery store to pick up lots of ice in my car. It didn't help my feelings, but I do love many of them. Grant me the serenity, and thanks for the link you prof you.

Interesting and compelling reading here. Pride! Oh Mary, DON"T ask! Your post has nice congruencies with mine, which is the primacy of community. In doing some of these readings (and their readings, in a hypertext mess which almost crashed my Mac-a-licious), I may be inspired to write a SECOND pride post, there was so much out there that was annoying making. Sigh... Not sure tho, although I will say this: Miss Cold City Pride-- Next year, skip the boring ass parade, and go for the festival, much more fun.

TornWordo: it's called "Equality Parade" in Poland. But that still doesn't shut up the conservative whackjobs... this year a fairly prominent politician requested that the police and right-wing militia beat people up with batons. The president tried to ban the parade, but couldn't after last year's events [cops broke up an equality rally, then the constitutional court deemed it unlawful to ban demos and rallies].
I could go on, but there's no point to my rant, really. We're so far behind America it isn't even funny. And yet we're more progressive than Russia. Some consolation, eh?
As a straight guy, I think gay pride is a good thing. Sure, it seems unfortunate that people need to affirm something that shouldn't need affirming (see gender and ethnic pride events), but there you have it.
